Skip was a passionate sports enthusiast his entire life, playing basketball and football in high school, competing in amateur surfing events in Hampton Beach, surfing the waters in Florida and Hawaii, and running the Boston Marathon. He began playing tennis in his college years and it became his true athletic passion. He enjoyed competing in Men’s Open “A” tournaments across New England and notched countless championship appearances and wins. Skip was known around the state as a renowned professional tennis coach. He ran the Londonderry tennis camp for numerous summers and was an active board member of the Granite State Kids Tennis organization, a grassroots tennis program focused on spreading the love of the game to junior players across New England. He was the coach of both the Boy’s and Girl’s LHS tennis teams leading the LHS Boys to their 1st state championship in school history as well as the 2014 Girl’s Singles championship. The tennis courts in Londonderry were officially named The Skip Burbine Tennis Courts in his honor shortly after his passing. This tennis tournament raises funds to contribute to research to find a cure for Ocular Melanoma as well as to award two Skip Burbine Scholarships each year to graduating members of the Londonderry Highschool tennis teams. Skip always described tennis as a lifelong sport that fosters good health and solid friendships. He loved the saying “The only thing worse than losing is not playing at all”…
